Product Summary

Ultra-wide photography doesn't have to mean carrying a large lens. At just 142g, this 20mm prime provides an expansive 94° angle of view in an unusually compact package, making it easy to capture buildings, tight interiors and broad scenes while keeping your everyday kit light.

The bright F2.5 maximum aperture extends its usefulness as light levels fall, whether shooting indoors, exploring a city in the evening or heading out around blue hour. Its small size makes it equally easy to leave mounted or carry alongside a standard zoom as a dedicated wide-angle option.

A 0.18m minimum focusing distance adds another creative dimension, allowing foreground subjects to dominate the frame while their surroundings remain part of the composition. Weather-resistant construction extends that versatility outdoors and across changing conditions.

In More Detail

A different way to frame a scene

Ultra-wide isn't just about fitting more in. Nearby objects gain prominence while their surroundings stay in view, adding depth and scale to architecture and environmental compositions, or letting a location become an important part of the story.

Bright enough for changing light

F2.5 provides useful flexibility as available light drops, including evening cityscapes and sunrise or sunset shooting. The combination of a bright aperture and broad coverage also makes this a compelling lightweight option for astrophotography, capturing large stretches of sky alongside foreground interest.

Small enough to bring everywhere

At just 40.9mm long, it barely registers in a bag or on the body. That makes it an easy addition alongside a standard zoom or second prime, rather than something you leave behind to save space.

Get closer to the foreground

Maximum magnification reaches 0.15x, favouring compositions built around a nearby subject and its environment rather than isolated macro detail. It's another way to exploit the exaggerated foreground-to-background relationship of such a wide perspective.

Optical construction

Eleven elements in nine groups include three aspherical and three ED elements, packing a sophisticated optical configuration into the small barrel. A seven-blade diaphragm controls the aperture from F2.5 through to F22.

Built for outdoors

Dust and splash resistant construction and operation down to -10°C support shooting in less predictable conditions, while the 62mm thread accepts compatible polarisers and ND filters. Stabilisation comes from the camera body, with no lens-based system built in.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I already own the 18-40mm zoom, is this redundant?

No. The 18-40mm prioritises focal length flexibility, whereas this gives you a brighter maximum aperture in a similarly lightweight package. It makes most sense if you regularly shoot towards the wide end and want more flexibility in lower light without carrying significantly more weight.

How does it compare with the 20-60mm zoom at 20mm?

The 20-60mm offers the versatility of zooming through to 60mm. This prime is smaller, lighter and around one stop brighter at F2.5 versus F3.5, making it particularly appealing if you value portability and regularly work at the widest end of the zoom.

Is F2.5 suitable for astrophotography?

Yes. It’s well suited to starscapes and night landscapes, particularly when keeping equipment light is important. A brighter specialist prime can gather more light, but will typically involve compromises elsewhere such as size, weight or cost.

Does the close focusing make it a macro alternative?

No. Maximum magnification is 0.15x, so small subjects won’t fill the frame as they would with a macro optic. Its strength is environmental close-ups, placing nearby details prominently against a much broader background.

Can I share filters with the Lumix S 40mm F2?

Yes. Both use a 62mm filter thread, allowing compatible polarisers, ND filters and other screw-in filters to be shared between them.

Is it worth adding if I already own a 35mm or 50mm prime?

Potentially. Those focal lengths provide more natural framing, whereas 20mm brings substantially more of the surroundings into view and creates much stronger foreground-to-background relationships. It fills a different creative role rather than duplicating them.
