Product Summary

The unusually broad focal range is the defining feature of this APS-C superzoom, covering the equivalent of 24-450mm on Sony cameras. That takes it from landscapes, interiors and travel photography through standard perspectives and portraits to wildlife, sport and other distant subjects without changing lenses.

Portability is impressive given that reach, with the Sony E version weighing 615g and measuring 121.4mm long. OS2 stabilisation provides additional support when shooting handheld, particularly towards the telephoto end, while HLA autofocus responds quickly and operates quietly enough for hybrid stills and video use.

Close-up photography adds another dimension. Maximum magnification reaches 1:2 at 70mm, while the minimum focusing distance is just 17cm at the widest setting. This combination makes smaller subjects and details practical without carrying a separate macro lens.

In More Detail

Ultra Versatile Zoom Range

This is the world’s first APS-C mirrorless lens with an 18.8x zoom ratio. It covers an extensive focal length from wide-angle to super-telephoto, allowing you to adapt to a variety of shooting situations, from travel and landscapes to wildlife and sports with just this single all-in-one superzoom.

This means that photographers can switch between capturing epic scenery at 16mm to incredible telephoto shots at 300mm without needing to change lenses.

Outstanding Close-up Performance

A key feature of this zoom is its 1:2 macro capability at 70mm, which allows for frame-filling close-up photography and video content creation. A tele-macro is ideal for capturing detailed shots of flowers, insects and more, and the lens provides sharp and detailed results at short focusing distances of just 17cm at the wide end to 105cm at telephoto end of the range.

Advanced Autofocus and Optical Stabilisation

Fast and accurate autofocus is powered by the familiar High-response Linear Actuator (HLA), which ensures smooth subject tracking, even when capturing fast-moving subjects like birds or sports and action.

The optical stabilisation system delivers 6 stops of shake compensation at 16mm and 4.5 stops at 300mm, making handheld shooting far more effective, particularly in low-light conditions or at long focal lengths.

Portable and reliable

Despite such extensive zoom capabilities, the lens is very portable with a weight of just 615g. Its construction includes signature dust and splash-resistant structure, which provides the confidence to shoot outdoors during poor conditions. The front element is also coated with a water and oil-repellent coat, which helps to keep the glass cleaner and free from dust and smears, even in adverse weather.

Optical Quality

An advanced optical formula includes 1 FLD (low-dispersion), 4 SLD (super-low dispersion), and 4 aspherical elements. This combination reduces chromatic aberrations, distortion, and ghosting, maintaining high image quality across the entire zoom range. The lens also includes a rounded diaphragm thanks to 9 aperture blades, which allows you to capture smooth bokeh balls and create soft defocus effects when shooting wide open.

Additionally, the lens is able to suppress focus breathing, which is ideal for video work as well as stills photography when focus stacking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it be used on full-frame cameras (FE)?

It is made for APS-C cameras. It can be mounted on most Sony full-frame E-mount bodies, but the camera should use its APS-C crop mode to avoid vignetting.

Is it suitable for video?

Yes. HLA autofocus operates quickly and quietly, while optical stabilisation supports handheld recording. Focus breathing is also suppressed to minimise changes in angle of view when shifting focus.

Does the zoom lock work at every focal length?

No. The switch locks the zoom at 16mm to prevent the barrel extending under its own weight when the lens is carried or pointed downwards.

Can I use optical stabilisation with a tripod?

Sigma recommends switching optical stabilisation off when mounted on a tripod and during Bulb exposures.

Is the variable aperture suitable for low-light photography?

The maximum aperture reduces from f/3.5 to f/6.7 through the zoom range, so portability and reach take priority over low-light capability. The built-in stabilisation can help with static subjects, while a faster lens may be preferable for moving subjects in limited light.

Looking to sell your Sigma 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary Lens for Sony E?

Our Verdict

The main reason to choose this lens is straightforward. It covers an extraordinary range while being super easy to carry all day. That makes particular sense for travel, wildlife and family photography, where subjects can change quickly and swapping lenses may be inconvenient and make you miss the shot.

Such an ambitious range inevitably prioritises versatility over the brighter apertures and more specialised optical characteristics of shorter-range lenses. For photographers who would rather carry one adaptable lens than build a kit around several alternatives, that trade-off may be exactly the point.
