Product Summary

Add another voice to the shoot, or record sound entirely on its own. This compact wireless microphone expands a compatible ECM-W5 system with high-resolution audio, discreet mounting and dependable transmission for interviews, events and filmmaking, and it is just as capable without a camera or receiver in sight. Built-in storage records independently, and 32-bit float preserves the headroom to fix levels in the edit rather than on location.

The omnidirectional capsule is ready the moment you clip it on, with a locking 3.5 mm input for a lavalier when you want the microphone out of sight. At 27.1 g, with magnetic or clip mounting, a dedicated REC button and a rechargeable battery, it adds a great deal of flexibility for very little weight.

Add a Voice Without Buying a Second System

Pair it with a compatible receiver and up to four speakers can be captured simultaneously on supported Sony cameras, each on an independent digital channel. That makes panel discussions, group interviews, documentaries and event coverage easier to balance in the edit, since every voice can be adjusted on its own.

Record Independently, Keep a Backup

With 64 GB of built-in memory, the transmitter works as a pocketable recorder for interviews, voice notes and location sound. Capacity runs to up to 90 hours at 48 kHz/32-bit float, or approximately 60 hours at 96 kHz/24-bit, depending on mode.

Used wirelessly, internal recording can keep a separate original of each take when enabled, providing a safety net if transmission is interrupted. Files transfer to a computer over USB-C, ready for editing or archiving.

32-Bit Float

Quiet speech and sudden volume spikes both survive intact, so large adjustments in post-production are possible without needing perfect gain on location. For projects where high-frequency detail matters most, 96 kHz/24-bit is available as a high-resolution alternative.

The omnidirectional capsule picks up sound from all directions, which keeps positioning simple for presenters and interviewees, and a 124 dB SPL ceiling leaves useful headroom for louder sources.

Long-Range, Low-Latency Transmission

Paired with the ECM-W5R, the link holds at up to 500 m in clear line of sight. Bluetooth frequency hopping helps minimise interference and dropouts, while low latency keeps capture responsive. It suits outdoor interviews, live events and any production where the camera cannot stay close to the speaker. Actual range depends on surroundings, obstacles and radio interference.

Mount It Anywhere, Hide It Completely

The integrated clip attaches to clothing, and magnetic mounting suits garments where a clip is awkward. Its understated styling works for interviews and presentations alike.

For a lower profile still, plug a compatible lavalier into the locking 3.5 mm mono input, where the secure TRS connection resists accidental disconnection as the wearer moves. The Sony ECM-L1 is one compatible option, available separately.

Simple Controls

A dedicated REC button starts and stops recording to internal storage with no camera involved, and LED indicators show power, recording and wireless connection status. When paired with a compatible receiver, you also get automatic or manual gain, noise cut and low cut to adapt to different voices and environments.

Light, Rechargeable, Location-Ready

At approximately 27.1 g, it stays comfortable through long interviews. The built-in lithium-ion battery gives up to seven hours of continuous operation per charge, and dust- and moisture-resistant construction adds confidence outdoors. Compatible ECM-W5 charging cases can extend operating time between charges, though a case is not included with this standalone product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work without a receiver?

Yes. Built-in memory records audio independently of any camera or receiver. A compatible receiver is required for wireless recording to a camera.

Can I add it to an existing ECM-W5 kit?

Yes. The complete kit includes two transmitters, and its receiver supports up to four in total, so you can add two separately purchased units.

Is a charging case included?

No. This is the standalone transmitter. The complete kit includes a charging case, but it is not supplied with this individual unit.

Can I use a lavalier?

Yes. The locking 3.5 mm input accepts compatible external microphones, including the separately available ECM-L1.

Can I record directly to a computer?

Recorded files transfer to a computer over USB-C. Compatible smartphone and computer recording arrangements are also supported, depending on the connection method and equipment used.

Is 32-bit float available at 96 kHz?

No. The supported combinations are 48 kHz/32-bit float and 96 kHz/24-bit.

How long can it record?

Up to seven hours of continuous operation per charge, and storage for up to 90 hours at 48 kHz/32-bit float or approximately 60 hours at 96 kHz/24-bit.
