Product Overview
A new generation of super-telephoto photography begins with a combination that would once have seemed improbable. This 400mm f/4.5 G Master fits serious reach into a body light enough to carry all day, without giving up the optical quality or responsive AF expected at this level.
That makes it a natural fit across the range, from an A7 V through to the high-speed A9 III. Birds in flight, wildlife across open ground, fast-moving sport: a bright aperture, Optical SteadyShot and exceptionally low weight put all three comfortably within reach handheld.
Extensive physical controls support quick adjustments in the field, and a dust and moisture-resistant build is ready for demanding conditions. Compatibility with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters stretches that reach further still, to 560mm or 800mm when the subject calls for it.
In More Detail
Where does it fit in the range?
Sony now offers several routes to longer reach, so the right choice comes down to how you shoot rather than which is 'best'. The 100-400mm f/4.5 GM provides zoom flexibility at a constant aperture, while this fixed 400mm trades that flexibility for a far lighter prime. The smaller 100-400mm f/5.6-8 goes further on portability still, but with a narrower maximum aperture and without the GM designation.
For low light, the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS is the specialist choice, gathering more light and giving greater scope for subject separation. At 2,895g it weighs almost three times as much as this f/4.5 model, making the newcomer considerably more practical for long sessions on foot.
The 600mm f/6.3 GM takes the opposite trade-off, exchanging aperture for another 200mm of native reach at a similarly low weight. It's particularly compelling for distant or small birds, while this model offers a broader balance of reach, brightness and handling across a wider range of subjects.
Unprecedented portability
At just 108 x 242mm and 994g excluding the tripod foot, this is a remarkably compact way to carry serious glass. The low weight makes quick changes of direction easier when tracking unpredictable movement, and takes the strain out of a full day in the field.
G Master detail from centre to edge
Three Super ED and one ED element sit within a 22-element, 16-group design, suppressing colour fringing while keeping the lens light. MTF data shows strong contrast and detail holding well towards the edges of the frame, genuinely impressive given the size.
Nano AR Coating II keeps flare and ghosting under control in backlit scenes, while an 11-blade circular diaphragm and carefully optimised spherical aberration deliver smooth, rounded bokeh to match the sharpness.
Autofocus engineered for extreme speed
Two high-thrust XD Linear Motors drive each focusing group for rapid, precise and quiet tracking, supporting continuous shooting at up to 120fps and following moving subjects during 4K/120p recording. Internal focusing keeps everything contained within the barrel, so nothing shifts or extends as it hunts.
Three-mode Optical SteadyShot
Mode 1 handles general camera shake, Mode 2 supports panning, Mode 3 minimises framing disturbance when tracking fast, erratic movement. Compatible E-mount camera bodies can coordinate their own stabilisation with OSS, with Active and Dynamic Active modes also available for video on supported combinations.
Controls for pro workflows
Four customisable focus-hold buttons provide access from different orientations, alongside focusing and assignable function rings. Dedicated AF/MF, Full-time DMF and SteadyShot controls join a FULL/∞-7m limiter, which prevents unnecessary hunting at closer distances. A tripod collar, removable foot and 95mm filter thread round out the setup.
Extend as far as 560mm or 800mm
Add a 1.4x TC for 560mm f/6.3 or the 2.0x for 800mm f/9, tighter framing for smaller or more distant subjects without carrying another large prime.
Protection for demanding environments
Sealed seams, silicone-rubber gaskets around buttons and switches, and a rubber ring at the mount provide dust and moisture resistance, though complete protection isn't guaranteed. A fluorine coating on the front element repels water, oil and contaminants, making fingerprints and debris easier to wipe off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this better than a 100-400mm zoom?
Depends how you shoot. A zoom gives more framing flexibility as distances change; this prime trades that for a brighter f/4.5 at 400mm in a far more portable package. The fixed focal length wins out when handheld comfort matters more than zoom convenience.
Do I need an A1 or A9 III to use it?
No, it pairs with compatible E-mount bodies, A7-series included. Higher-end models simply unlock extra autofocus and continuous shooting performance on top.
Is it weather resistant?
Yes. Sealed seams, gaskets at the buttons and switches, and a rubber ring at the mount resist dust and moisture, though complete protection isn’t guaranteed, so normal care still applies in tough conditions.
What size filters does it take?
A 95mm front thread accepts standard screw-in filters.
Should I choose 400mm f/4.5 or 600mm f/6.3 for bird photography?
The longer lens helps most with small or distant birds where filling the frame matters. The shorter option trades some reach for a brighter aperture and wider field of view, easier for tracking movement and framing larger or closer subjects.
