Product Overview

A 600mm super-telephoto has always meant compromise, whether heavy glass, tired arms, or a lens you leave behind more often than you'd like. This G Master prime rewrites that trade-off, putting long-range framing into a body light enough for extended handheld sessions.

That makes it a natural fit for small birds and distant wildlife, where extra reach can reduce the need for heavy cropping, and for aircraft and airshows, where tracking fast subjects shouldn't feel like a workout. Fast, precise autofocus keeps pace with the action, while Optical SteadyShot helps hold the frame steady at such a narrow angle of view.

It still delivers the high-resolution rendering and smooth bokeh expected from G Master, alongside comprehensive physical controls. Add a teleconverter and the focal length stretches to 840mm or 1200mm for subjects you simply can't get close enough to.

In More Detail

Where does it fit in the range?

This is the longer of two closely related primes. 400mm f/4.5 GM gives a brighter aperture and wider view, useful for larger subjects or distances that change quickly. Move up to 600mm and you trade some of that flexibility for noticeably closer framing, without adding meaningful weight.

The appeal here is a dedicated focal length with G Master quality in a package that stays approachable rather than exhausting. If a shorter lens has ever left you cropping heavily after the fact, this one closes that gap before you press the shutter.

Remarkable portability

At 108 x 263mm and 995g excluding the tripod foot, this puts exceptional range into a size that's easy to carry and shoot with over a full day. It's only 1g heavier than the 400mm f/4.5, despite the extra 200mm of focal length.

G Master quality

MTF data shows strong contrast and resolution maintained towards the edges, an impressive result for such a compact design. Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting when shooting towards strong light sources.

Optimised spherical aberration and an 11-blade circular aperture contribute to smooth, refined bokeh, helping isolated subjects stand apart from busy surroundings.

Autofocus for unpredictable movement

Two high-thrust XD Linear Motors drive each focusing group, working with the latest control algorithm for fast, precise and quiet tracking. AF supports continuous shooting at up to 120fps with the α9 III and follows moving subjects during 4K/120p recording.

Internal focusing keeps the mechanism contained within the barrel, so its dimensions remain unchanged during focusing.

Three-mode Optical SteadyShot

Mode 1 compensates for general camera shake, Mode 2 supports panning and Mode 3 minimises framing disturbance when following fast or irregular movement. On compatible Sony camera bodies, in-camera stabilisation works alongside OSS, with Active and Dynamic Active modes also available for video on supported combinations.

At 600mm, this support becomes particularly valuable as even small movements are magnified noticeably in the viewfinder.

Controls that support field use

Four customisable focus-hold buttons sit around the barrel for access from different orientations, alongside a focusing ring and assignable function ring. AF/MF, Full-time DMF, SteadyShot controls and a FULL/∞-7m focus-range limiter allow direct adjustment without repeatedly digging into camera menus.

A tripod collar, removable foot and 95mm filter thread complete the setup.

Reach all the way to 1200mm

The 1.4x teleconverter takes you to 840mm f/9, while the 2.0x reaches 1200mm f/13, providing extremely tight framing for small or remote subjects without carrying another large prime.

Protection for demanding environments

Sealed seams, silicone-rubber gaskets around buttons and switches, and a rubber ring at the mount provide dust and moisture resistance, though complete protection isn't guaranteed. A fluorine coating on the front element repels water, oil and other contaminants, making fingerprints and debris easier to wipe off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this better than the 400mm f/4.5 for wildlife?

It depends on subject and working distance. The extra reach helps most with small or distant birds and animals, since filling more of the frame means less cropping later. The shorter option trades that reach for a brighter maximum aperture and wider field of view, better suited to larger or closer subjects.

Do I need an A1 or A9 III to use it?

No, it pairs with compatible E-mount bodies. Higher-end models simply unlock additional autofocus and continuous shooting performance.

What do the teleconverters cost me in aperture?

The 1.4x combination becomes 840mm f/9, while the 2.0x reaches 1200mm f/13. You gain substantially tighter framing, but the smaller maximum aperture means available light and camera ISO performance become increasingly important.

What size filters does it take?

A 95mm front thread accepts standard screw-in filters.

Should I choose this or a 100-400mm zoom?

Choose the 600mm prime when extra distance matters most, especially for small or distant subjects that would otherwise need heavy cropping. A 100-400mm zoom offers more flexibility when subjects change distance quickly or you need to reframe without repositioning.
